In light of the recent tornado that impacted Buffalo County, we would like to take a moment to remind our community about the importance of severe weather awareness and preparedness.
When severe weather threatens an area, official warnings are issued through multiple alerting methods, including outdoor warning sirens, mobile alerts, weather apps, and local media. It’s important to remember that when an outdoor warning siren stops sounding, it does not necessarily mean the danger has passed. Sirens are time limited, and conditions may still be hazardous. Residents should remain in a safe shelter until an official all clear is issued through trusted weather sources.
The storm on April 17th demonstrated how quickly conditions can change. Limited visibility from heavy rain and wind was followed by a brief period of clearing and sunshine, which helped fuel the next wave of severe weather. When darker clouds returned just minutes later, conditions intensified, ultimately producing the tornado. While a short break in the storm may feel reassuring, it can be one of the most dangerous moments during a severe weather event.
We encourage everyone to stay vigilant and take advantage of available technology to receive accurate, up to date information on when to seek shelter and when it is safe to resume normal activities. In rural areas where warning sirens may not reach all locations, additional alerting tools are especially important.
Buffalo County is ending it’s contract with NIXLE and has partnered with Regroup, a notification app that provides severe weather alerts and other important public safety information. We strongly encourage residents, along with their family members and friends, to sign up and stay informed. Please see the attached information to sign up with Regroup.
